What is age-assurance from k-ID?
You might be reading this because an online service or video game has asked you to verify your age with k-ID. If you’re not familiar with age assurance, age verification, or k-ID here’s a quick overview:
What is k-ID?
k-ID provides technology that helps online services and video games to provide age-appropriate experiences. We also support families in managing their child(ren)’s online experiences across platforms using k-ID.
Why might I need to verify my age?
Certain services - or specific features within a service - may implement age-based restrictions to support a safer and age-appropriate experience for their audience. This helps to ensure people have an experience that is appropriate for their age group. To support this, k-ID verifies ages though a process known as age assurance.
What is ‘age assurance’?
Age assurance refers to a range of methods and technologies used to estimate, verify or confirm someone’s age. Different countries allow different methods, but here are a few commonly used by k-ID:
- Face Scan: Your age is estimated by completing a video selfie
- ID Scan: Your age is confirmed by scanning a government-issued ID
- Credit Card: Confirm you’re an adult by using a valid credit card
In all of these instances, your information is processed for verification purposes only and is not stored or used for any other purposes.
How does this protect my privacy?
Your data is processed solely for one-time age verification. It is not stored by k-ID, the service using k-ID, or any third-party processors involved in the age assurance process.
What happens if I fail age-verification, but I believe I’m old enough?
If a face scan underestimates your age, you can usually try an alternative method, like an ID scan. k-ID offers multiple verification options tailored to each service, so there’s always a path to verify your age.
